Setting Up against an Opponent

In a set up for a fight/match, please consider the following important points:

1) Size & weight of the opponent

The size of the opponent will give you some idea of his reach, his agility and the speed you can expect him to bring to the table and also the impact force of your opponent.

  1. Speed & rhythm of the opponent

If you have a chance to watch your opponent fight in an earlier fight, use this to determine his speed, rhythm of his techniques and reach.

3) Offensive / defensive / aggressive opponent

Is your opponent an offensive or defensive fighter?  If your opponent is offensive, you may want to switch it around and be (more) offensive on him to see if he can fight defensively.  If your opponent is very aggressive you may want to stay far away (which makes winning a little difficult) and try him to make a mistake (through your tactic and strategy) or you may choose to be more aggressive than him.

4) When to attack

Look for flows in your opponent’s moves, concentration & focus, timing and Kamae, anything that may give you an advantage.
